When you’re in need of something quick for a last minute holiday gift, nothing is better than something that you can make at home. And this recipe is as easy as it gets. It’s thoughtful and a gift of food like this one allows its recipient to continue to enjoy it long after the holidays are over. The citrus sugar is a great substitute for regular sugar anywhere you might use it (and can be easily be made with any other citrus as well). Place the sugar in a pretty jar, tie with ribbon + a card stating what it is and you’re done. 

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • Zest of 1 orange (organic if possible)

Place sugar and zest in a bowl of a food processor. Pulse mixture until it is combined and a few flecks of orange remain visible. Transfer to a baking sheet and smooth mixture out into a thin layer. Allow to dry for about 1 hour. Once dried, transfer to an airtight glass container(s) and store for up to 1 month.

Makes approximately 1 cup.

cook’s note: Organic fruit is recommended because it’s void of the waxy film on the outside of regular fruit. If not using organic fruit, be sure to wash and scrub it well then completely dry it before using.
