A refreshing treat for a cold winter day, this cocktail is bursting with ginger and fresh citrus flavor. The simple syrup can be made in advance and refrigerated for up to one month, ready for a quick drink anytime.
Ginger Simple Syrup
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1 2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and chopped
2 ounces vodka, or to taste
1 ounce freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 ounce ginger simple syrup
1 tablespoon sugar, for garnish
- Chill martini glass.
- Make ginger simple syrup. Place water, sugar, and ginger in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer until sugar has dissolved, about 10 minutes. Allow syrup to cool to room temperature. Remove ginger, cover, and chill until ready to serve.
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add vodka, grapefruit and lemon juices, and ginger simple syrup. Cover and shake vigorously, or stir, until combined.
- Spread sugar onto a flat plate. Rub rim of martini glass with lemon juice (from squeezed lemon). Holding glass from its stem, dip rim into sugar, coating entire rim of glass. Strain vodka mixture into glass and serve.
cook’s note: The simple syrup makes enough for at least 12 cocktails.
