hot buttered rum

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
6 ounces dark rum, or to taste
16 ounces of water
Toasted marshmallows, for serving, optional
- In a bowl, combine butter, honey, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to use.
- Bring water to a boil in a teapot over grate of fire.
- Meanwhile, place 1 tablespoon butter into each mug. Add equal amounts of rum to each glass. When water comes to a boil, divide water among mugs, stirring to combine. Taste and adjust as desired. Top with toasted marshmallows (if using).
cook’s note: Make a batch of butter, shape into a log, and chill until set. Tie each end of log with twine, attach a little recipe card and bring as a hostess gift to your next campfire (a bottle of rum is optional, but highly recommended).
