Hints of ginger and lemon play supporting roles to your favorite bourbon in this fresh yet warming cocktail, perfect for a cold winter night.

Ginger Simple Syrup
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1 2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and chopped

Ice
2 ounces bourbon, or to taste
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
1/2 ounce ginger simple syrup

  1. Make ginger simple syrup. Place water, sugar, and ginger in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer until sugar has dissolved, about 10 minutes. Allow syrup to cool to room temperature. Remove ginger, cover, and chill until ready to serve.
  2. To serve, fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add bourbon, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Shake until well blended.
  3. Place additional ice in a serving glass. Strain mixture into glass and serve.

Serves 1.

cook’s note: The simple syrup makes enough for at least 12 cocktails.
